ABOUT THE COURSE

Designed with the help of a team of infection control nurses, managers and staff representatives the course is a computer-based self-study programme tailored precisely to the needs of NHS staff.

The course is designed with the novice computer user in mind: simple navigation allows the training to focus on studying the course without worrying about how to use a complicated interface.

In all, the course should take around 45 minutes to complete, including the assessment module.

The course consists of a tutorial module and an assessment module:

Tutorial

Briefly, the tutorial covers the following topics:

Introduction to Infections

MRSA and “superbugs”

Hand washing

Isolation

Needles & Sharps

Hygiene and Cleaning

Each chapter is followed by a “mission” designed to test the user’s understanding of the material just covered.

Assessment

Having completed the tutorial, the trainee takes an on-line assessment. This consists of a “bank” of around 50 questions, from which the trainee is asked 20 questions. All the questions are multiple-choice. Immediate feedback is given as each question is answered. At the end of the assessment the trainee is told whether or not they have passed (the pass mark defaults to 80%, but this can be changed by an administrator).

Successful trainees have the option of printing a certificate. All results are recorded to a database as a permanent record of training.
